A rising trepidation swept over Daniel Browett. He stood on the forecastle of the Echo, gazing southeast across the sea. In a small wooden ship driven by cloth sails, he must deliver a company of faith Saints safely across the treacherous Atlantic Ocean, and from there by steamboat up the Mississippi River to Nauvoo.
Daniel let his blue eyes rake across the ship and its passengers. Could his wife, Elizabeth, keep everyone happy and healthy with her giddy personality and herbalist skills? Hannah, Robert's wife, was seven months pregnant and feared giving birth at sea. Worse, Hannah's sister-Nancy-was already seasick and dehydrated, and was only two months into her pregnancy. Seasickness had already afflicted more than half the ship's passengers. Then there was Henry, Hannah's brother. There were already reports that about half of Henry's split personality wanted to lead a rebellion and turn the ship around and head back to Liverpool. But who could blame him? The early February weather had brought nothing but black banks of freezing fog and slanting rain from gale-forced winds. Below him, as he hung onto the bulwark, jagged masses of waves were leaping like gray-bearded demons in some kind of witch dance of the sea. Satan did not want Daniel's company of Mormons to reach Zion. |
A sense of duty compelled Daniel to lead a company of 109 Saints from England to Zion

This is the continuing story of Daniel and Elizabeth and Robert and Hannah as they seek to gather with the Saints in Nauvoo. They are former members of the United Brethren congregation, but now converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints-thanks to the efforts of Wilford Woodruff.
Hannah is now the mother of three children and heavy with child again. Elizabeth is still barren, praying daily for the Lord to send her a child. Robert has given up his chance to be the British heavyweight champion and regrets almost causing bodily harm to Elder Woodruff; he hopes the Lord has forgiven him. Daniel is a bundle of neverves. The crushing burden to lead this Mormon company to America is almost overwhelming.
But the call beckons to help build a temple to the Lord in Nauvoo. Daniel must succeed at all costs.
